Group A to Z
-
- T.A.N.G.O
- It's aim is to reach the community where they socialise and live, to reach those who would not walk through the doors of any conventional church as we know it. Doing church in a completely fresh and spontaneous way, avoiding any ?churchy? language and allowing ourselves to be vulnerable and open. This is achieved by creating a relaxed atmosphere serving tea, coffee and light refreshments, modern up to date songs, and people telling real life stories about themselves. Open opportunities for people to respond with questions and a real challenge of the power of prayer both open and personal. All this is finished off with an opportunity to relax and get to know one another in an environment that people are used to and feel comfortable with.

The music which the band plays is traditional new orleans jazz, which is very different and generally more popular than modern jazz. It was very popular after the war, and the cavern club in liverpool was the main local venue for it. Although the music is mainly appreciated by the older age group, we find that younger people are beginning to enjoy it. (Three members of the band are St Helens residents: Peter Darwin - George St Music Shop - Drummer, John Higham - formerly Doctor John - trumpet, David Rigby - Guitar & Banjo)

- The Parr Band (Richardson Ltd) St Helens
- The Parr Band is commited to serving the community in many ways. It undertakes summer engagements such as Church Walking Days, Fetes and outdoor concerts, many of which are in support of local community groups. In particular the band supports Willowbrook Hospice at their Tree of Lights Christmas Services and also with concerts throughout the year. During the winter and particularly during the Christmas festive season the band supports local churches in carol services but also engages in their own fund raising. The members would like to express their very grateful thanks to all members of the St Helens public who support them whilst playing in Morrisons, Baxters Lane and Tesco, St Helens for their generousity. Without the support of the community and the free band room facility provided by Viridor Ltd, Lancots Lane, the band would not be able to sponsor the younger band members, who are learning to play and are annually entered into the Associated Board Music Examinations. The band contests locally in the 3rd section and nationally in the 4th section. Senior Band and Training band rehearsals take place Wednesday, Friday and Saturday covering both groups. A phone call to the Secretary for any prospective new member, young or old, will ensure instruments, music and tuition are available along with a warm welcome.
