FINTRA STROKE CLUB The Stroke Club started on Friday 28th March 08 at Fingerpost Medical Centre on Atlas Street. It startS approximately 9.30am until 12.30pm Anyone who has suffered a stroke, no matter Which area of the town you live in, will be entitled to come. Their carers can and should, where possible, accompany them. It will be very informal and friendly and hopefully bring everyone together to achieve a positive outcome. Besides activities, we have chair based Tai Chi, lip reading lessons and people able to give advice on Heating-Benefits-Health Issues and many other things that affect our daily lives. If transport is needed, please let Fintra know and we will try and arrange it. This will be a great opportunity for stroke patients to once again play a part in their community. The Forming of Fintra Stroke Club Before Fingerpost Park Medical Centre was built, Fintra commitee where having talks with a the P.C.T. and planners about what services were needed in the area. After a number of community meetings - listening to the views of our members, we listed a number of suggestions, including top of the list - a Stroke Patients Club. We new these clubs where already up and running in other areas, but the difference with Fintra's is that the patient does not need a GP or Consultants referral and it is local and entirely free. In the past, some of our memebers who have tried to access these other clubs have found they are costly and too far away, leaving them no option but to stay at home - this is what we don't want. The P.C.T. listened to us and cooperated on this project. Initially the club will run for 3 Months then it will be reviewed. If it proves to be a success then they will be looking to extend into an evening session. This is a great opportunity to have this service on our doorstep so hopefully if we all work together we can make it a success, not just for now, but for the future. The club will also benefit those who care for the patient by giving them the opportunity to speak with others and discuss issues that concern them. - Bette Yates (Secretary Fintra T/R)
